Spencer Fearn Interviewed by City Region Business Magazine

CR Business Magazine ask the questions of...
SPENCER FEARN

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED/FIRST JOB?
My first job was a paper round at 11, followed
by a milk round at the age of 12. My first business venture was selling Kleeneze door to door when I was 16. Many sponges and dusters were bought out of pity but overall most customers were genuinely appreciative to see a teenager get off his backside and do something positive! It was hard work, but an incredibly valuable lesson in business.

BLACKBERRY OR IPHONE?
iPhone

VACATION/STAYCATION – WHERE?
I love the Emirates, in particular Abu Dhabi and
Dubai and visit at least once a year. You’re guaranteed good weather and the place we like
to stay has a football pitch, which is perfect for my son Lennon to run rings round his dad!

BEST BUSINESS ADVICE YOU WERE GIVEN? The most memorable and important are from Roger, my Dad. Many moons ago he told me “put quality at the heart of everything you do and everything will fall into place” and “if you do a deal and then realise you’ll lose money on it, stick to your word and take the hit…reputation is everything”.

FAVOURITE RESTAURANT IN SOUTH YORKSHIRE?
450 in Wickersley, they serve great food at a very reasonable price.

WHO WOULD BE YOUR DREAM DINNER COMPANION?
Nelson Mandela, an inspiration to millions.

YOUR FIRST WORDS TO HIM OR HER?
I would ask how he had the strength to overcome the problems that he faced.

CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT IT?
That iPhone.

TOP TIME SAVING TIP?
I travel a lot through work and invariably take the train as it enables me to get through tonnes of work. It’s also a lot better for the environment. So, my tip is take the train and leave the car at home.

HOW MANY HOURS IN YOUR WORKING DAY?
It varies really, it’s not uncommon for me to start at 5.30am and finish at 8pm. On other days I’ll finish around 3pm and pick my son up from school and spend time with him, my little girl Scarlett and of course, my beautiful fiancee, Emma. Getting the right balance of work and family is paramount to me.

WHAT DO YOU DO TO UNWIND/RELAX? Spending time with the family - either doing lots or very little. I also play tennis twice a week and when in London I regularly visit the gym. It probably doesn’t sound very relaxing but it’s the way I keep my mind off work and recharge.

BEST THING ABOUT ROTHERHAM?
The people. Over the years I’ve moved to London but always come home. Although born in Sheffield I’ve grown up in Rotherham and I’m very proud to be from a town of straight talking, hard working people. One of my proudest achievements in business was opening the LifeSkills centre in Rotherham. It took me 8 years to set up a LifeSkills centre in my home town and it’s great to see what a difference we’ve made already.

BOOK OR KINDLE?
Book.

LAST FILM SEEN/BOOK READ?
Film – The Fighter.
Book – The Shadow Market.

ALL TIME BUSINESS HERO AND WHY?
A few really. The great entrepreneur of our time
Richard Branson and closer to home my Dad and late Mum Susan. They both had plenty of success but also the odd failure. I’m indebted to them for the business acumen they’ve imparted on me.

TIE OR OPEN-COLLAR?
Open-collar

“For any company considering investing in an Apprentice I would recommend the services of LifeSkills for efficient placement of candidates who are eager and fit for purpose. Although lacking in experience, (as you would expect) the young people we have welcomed into the business over the last 3+ years have turned out to be hardworking, great learners and keen to impress. Attitude is everything as they say and if you can hire that, then it’s a great start! Thank you Hadleigh and the team for your support in helping our business invest in future talent.”
